Unfortunately, I have no idea if it’s a common physics metaphor. It might be that only those of us reared on Hewitt’s “Conceptual Physics” will get it.
I’m pretty sure it’s a fairly common analogy in intro physics classes. At least, Hewitt didn’t make it up.
